Every CFL team goes into draft night with a wish list and the ultimate goal of making itself better heading into a new season.
On Tuesday night, the Ottawa REDBLACKS were confident they did just that, starting with a one-two punch of a pair of players the team had coveted heading the 2024 CFL Draft.
GM Shawn Burke and the group at REDBLACKS Draft HQ landed Auburn product Nick Mardner – the top-ranked receiver in this year’s draft – with the club’s first selection, second overall. That was followed up with the selection of defensive lineman Daniel Okpoko out of San Diego State with Ottawa’s second selection, 11th overall.
“You guys know I have a pretty serious face most of the time and I’m out here smiling,” said Burke as he met the media to break down the selections.
Dyce echoed the sentiment, saying no matter who a team has on their list, there are no guarantees they will be available. It’s an exciting moment for the football operations team when they are. The coach praised the football ops staff, scouts and coaches for a job well done on draft night
“This is a true team effort and that’s how it rolls here,” he said.

Chaque équipe de la LCF aborde la soirée de repêchage avec une liste de souhaits et l’objectif ultime de s’améliorer en vue d’une nouvelle saison.
Mardi soir, le ROUGE et NOIR d’Ottawa était confiante d’avoir attaint cet objectif, en commençant par un duo de joueurs que l’équipe convoitait en vue de la séance de sélection de la LCF de 2024.
Le directeur général Shawn Burke et son groupe ont obtenu le produit d’Auburn Nick Mardner – le meilleur receveur au repêchage de cette année – avec la première sélection du club, la deuxième au total. Ce choix a été suivi par la sélection du joueur de ligne défensive Daniel Okpoko, de San Diego State, avec le deuxième choix d’Ottawa, le 11e au total.
“Vous savez que j’ai un visage plutôt sérieux la plupart du temps et que je suis ici en train de sourire “, a déclaré Burke alors qu’il rencontrait les médias mardi.
Dyce a fait écho à ce sentiment, en disant que peu importe qui une équipe a sur sa liste, il n’y a aucune garantie qu’il sera disponible. Lorsqu’il l’est, c’est un moment passionnant pour toute l’équipe des opérations footballistiques. L’entraîneur a félicité l’équipe des opérations footballistiques, les recruteurs et les entraîneurs pour leur excellent travail lors de la soirée de sélection.
“Il s’agit d’un véritable travail d’équipe et c’est ainsi que les choses fonctionnent ici”, a-t-il déclaré.
